Wedding at the Glasgow Art Club

1st May 2010

Having visited the Glasgow Art Club in the past at the invitation of two musician friends I was looking forward to the wedding of Paul and Geraldine so I could go back there.

Glasgow Art Club, Bath Street

The club is described as “the city’s best kept secret” and anyone visiting there for the first time would be lucky to find it among the other buildings in Bath Street without an address. As soon as you approach the carved wooden doors though you can start to appreciate the history of the place. The interior architecture and décor is “shabby chic” by age, not design. One of those rare, genuine places that doesn’t have to try to be something.

Wedding Reception

As a wedding reception venue, the Glasgow Art Club is large enough for 100 sitting guests in the main gallery – the exhibited artwork being an additional bonus. The staff are very friendly and efficient which helped to make Paul and Geraldine’s wedding thoroughly enjoyable.

Shoes and Dress

Starting at Geraldine’s parent’s house, I captured some shots of the bride and bridesmaids getting ready before heading off to the Art Club to capture the scene of Paul greeting the arriving family and friends.

Young Guest

The wedding ceremony was conducted by Linda, a Humanist Celebrant and was held in the bright and airy front room. Paul and Geraldine chose to personalise their ceremony with a traditional ‘hand fasting’ and an exchange of gifts between the two families – Paul presenting Geraldine’s family with a framed ancient map and an emblem of his home area of Lancashire, and Geraldine presenting his family with their clan tartan.

At Kelvingrove Park

After the ceremony, we all gathered outside the building for some group photographs before whisking the bridal party away for a few minutes to nearby Kelvingrove Park.

After returning to the club and giving the Bride and Groom time to enjoy the company of their friends and family we made use of the staircase for some more photography before the wedding breakfast was served in the gallery. As people waited for the entrance of the Bride and Groom, one of their friends played some of their favourite tunes on the piano.

The Wedding Breakfast

Speeches were held after the meal, and I can honestly say that the best man’s speech was one of the most unique and entertaining I have seen – he had produced a mini quiz based on the life of Paul and handed it out to the guests.

Cutting the Cake

Following the speeches, it was time to get some shots of the cake being cut before heading off.

Congratulations to Paul and Geraldine and thank you to everyone for making the day so special.

    Stuart,
    Great pictures!
We are hosting an event at the art club. Would you mind if we used your picture of the doorbell? The invitation is going out online to all our members (550) and we’d be happy to put a link through to your site.
    thanks!
