Wedding at Howies Restaurant, Edinburgh

Congratulations to Jess and Jonathan who married at Howies on Waterloo Place in Edinburgh. The ceremony was conducted by a Humanist Celebrant, Tim and was well received by the gathered friends and family. The weather was fantastic – sunny and warm – so we headed off to Prince’s Street Gardens for some photography and also took a trip up nearby Calton Hill.

Edinburgh Castle Wedding

One of the most romantic wedding venues in Scotland is Edinburgh Castle. There are several areas within the castle grounds that couples can marry, the most intimate of which is St. Margaret’s Chapel. The chapel is one of the oldest intact buildings in Scotland and is only large enough to hold a few guests but around the chapel are assorted museums, barracks and open spaces. Anyone who has visited the castle will know that the views over Edinburgh and beyond are fantastic given the right weather and fortunately the early fog lifted and left us with clear blue skies for the wedding of David and Claire.

Even getting there was a bit of an adventure, with me and Matt driving underneath the castle through the ‘military’ tunnel and parking right between two of the castle’s big canons – who said parking in Edinburgh was difficult?

The lovely bride Claire and her father were escorted into the chapel by a piper – which seemed to conjour up a few dozen more tourists. All part of getting married in Edinburgh!

After the ceremony, we took our time taking photographs outside the chapel near Mons Meg – an absolutely huge canon looking out over Edinburgh City – and then in several scenic spots around the grounds as we headed towards the Great Hall. The hall was not available for us to photograph in, but we were guided along by the very helpful Sandra to a room in the Royal Residence with a grand fireplace. Although the fire wasn’t real, the warmth inside was very welcome.

Having taken our shots inside with some more passing tourists for company, we finished off our Edinburgh Castle wedding with some photographs next to the canons before heading for the reception venue at Howie’s Restaurant in Waterloo Place.

Wedding at Edinburgh Zoo

This was the first time I have covered a wedding at the Zoo and despite the rain meaning we couldn’t shoot outside (well, we could.. but I don’t like to get guests cold and wet!) we managed to get the group shots done on the grand staircase in the venue. This meant two separate shots as there were quite a few guests. Early on, we had a visitor make an appearance for a few shots. After checking with his handler that he would be OK with flash photography we got some nice shots – the handler managed to position himself neatly behind the groom for this one.

The venue is set at the zoo in Mansion House, but apart from the art on the walls and the invited animal visitor you would not be aware of this. The venue has fantastic views over Edinburgh and ornate decorations. Very nice indeed.

Wedding of Tom & Jessica at Lothian Chambers, Edinburgh

Congratulations to Tom and Jessica who married on 30th October at Lothian Chambers Registrar’s Office in Edinburgh. The venue is located on the famous “Royal Mile” in Edinburgh next to St Giles’ Cathedral and has been re-designed inside to make wedding ceremonies run efficiently. The largest ceremony room is The City of Edinburgh suite and has large windows on three sides with views across West Parliament Square towards the cathedral. Tom and Jessica’s wedding was enhanced by a string quartet which was easily accommodated in the large room.

After some photography on the grand staircase, we popped over the square for some group shots before setting off to the reception venue at “The Dome” on George Street.

Big Wedding Photography in Edinburgh

Providing wedding photography in edinburgh can be challenging, as anyone with local knowledge of the traffic there will confirm! Parking is limited, roadworks widespread and diversions numerous – all in a city with already busy traffic. Satnav systems become little more than dashboard ornaments for some journeys.

So, when I was approached by Mike and Joanne to cover their wedding photography for the whole day I was presented with a challenge – there would be a total of five venues to cover. Fortunately the couple were well organised and had a minibus hired to ferry guests from place to place and the solution was for me to join them on the journey from the ceremony at Dalmeny Kirk to the photoshoot at the Botanical Gardens then the wedding breakfast at the Grainstore Restaurant and finally to the reception at Orocco Pier in South Queensferry. This left me driving only to the bride’s home and then the church.

Not only were Mike and Joanne well organised, they were also an ideal wedding couple to photograph and the variety of venues provided good opportunities for some lovely images.
