Yesterday was a long 3 hour round trip to Gretna Green near the England / Scotland border to photograph a wedding for a lovely young couple, Stuart and Diane.
For those not familiar with the legend of Gretna Green, it became ‘the place’ for eloping couples in the 18th century after a new law was passed in England that set the legal age of marriage without the parent’s consent to 21 years old and restricted ceremonies to churches. Through the previously agreed ‘Act of Union’ between England and Scotland, Scottish laws governing marriage remained legal even in England. Gretna’s prime location at the border meant that it became a very popular destination for under-21s wishing to marry. It is worth noting that Scotland is also a popular choice for couples from abroad to marry as there is no longer a minimum period of residence.

The wedding yesterday was held at the ‘World Famous Old Blacksmith’s Shop’. Hat’s off to the two ushers, the piper and of course the registrar who were all exceptionally helpful and good humoured, and ensured that despite the bride being a few minutes late (every bride’s prerogative!) the ceremony went smoothly.

Signing the Records
After the official marriage ceremony, the couple were treated to a traditional anvil marriage and added their names to the record of people following in the footsteps of so many young newlyweds before.

Confetti
Fortune smiled on us as the forecasted rain held off, allowing us to capture some lovely shots outside.

Outside the Blacksmith's Shop
Congratulations to Stuart and Diane and we wish them years of happiness ahead. To find out more about wedding photography in Gretna or the rest of Scotland, visit our main site.
